    Big 2017 AH-HA for You? 17th Annual Tips & Tricks Exchange

    This is our annual SIG Holiday TIPS & TRICKS EXCHANGE. It is a joint Nov/Dec meeting and the agenda is one that we have had for 17 years. We gather to share something that has impacted us either professionally or personally during 2017. 

    We ask that you bring a book, a tip, a technique, a brain-friendly recipe, a picture, a poem, a great quote, or anything else that has inspired, pleased or touched you in the past year. If it has been surprisingly successful, that's even better.

    You can share your tip or trick with the group by telling us about it and/or making copies for everyone. We've found this to be one of our best programs - always full of surprises
    and a real GIFT to all of us!

    NOTE: Our third annual after-SIG lunch will be at a nearby restaurant open for lunch. Feel free to join us (last year we went to Nantucket-Sutton Station, 5826 Fayetteville Road).

    Emotional DNA: How Our Families Influence the Way We Show Up at Work

    For years, we have discussed how we inherit our physical DNA and now the world of Systemics and Epigenetics is highlighting how we also inherit and are deeply, yet unconsciously influenced by our emotional DNA. Learn abut the dynamics and hidden patterns (concepts) in Family and Organizational Constellations/Dynamics and see how our families influence the way we show up in our work world (we really do bring our families to work with us). You will ask yourself the following questions, hear some examples, and discuss opportunities for creating change within yourself, your families, and your organizations.
    Questions to consider:

    • What is your sense of how you "fit" in your family and organization/business?
    • Do you know exactly where you belong in your family? Describe how do you feel about your place at work?
    • Do you have a similar role in your family of origin and in your organizati (i.e. caregiver)? Or are they different and how?

    Telling Stories: Enhancing Connections and Delivering Optimal Messages
    It's well known that even before the written word, storytelling was the preeminent method of conveying historical information of all types from one generation to another.  To this day, storytelling continues to be one of most effective means for communicating thoughts, ideas, emotions and connecting people with the storyteller and each other. In this session, we will explore the key elements of effective storytelling and how you can begin to construct stories that will enhance your connection with others and most optimally deliver your professional and personal (P&P) messages. 

    As a Business Consultant and Executive Coach with extensive senior management experience, Fred Cooley is adept at building strong leaders who in turn create strong organizations.  He is known for leveraging relationship building, communication and executive management skills to assist clients in getting what they really want in their professional and personal lives.  Having worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 35 years in various leadership roles, he is well-equipped to understand the challenges of today's leaders.

    Fred holds the designation of a Distinguished Toastmaster, which is the highest level of recognition in the Toastmasters organization. He enjoys volunteer work in the areas of hospice care and providing music enrichment for nursing homes. In his spare time, he relishes playing the piano, reading, and hiking.

    Strategic Problem-solving with Harvard's "Gossip Triads"

    The “Gossip Triad" method* has been used for a number of years by the Harvard School of Government in their leadership programs. It is an experience that you, as a consultant, can use in any program where there is a mix of people from different units or areas (or from different organizations). Participants are asked to send in pre-work, briefly describing a challenge from their workplace. They will use this challenge to examine in the triads, so confidentiality is a given.

    Jane Tucker heard about the method this year from a colleague from the Southwest, who had seen it work,and she has now used it several times – in a national program with people from various institutions and in a single organization in Hawaii with people from different units. It is simple, intense and gives everyone a chance to be the focus of attention for personalized questioning and coaching that can give the recipient new perspectives. (Note: at the School of Government, each person normally gets 1-1.5 hour’s consultation. As demonstrated and used recently, each person will get about 20 minutes and it has worked!)

    At the moment, Tucker is planning to substitute a version of “Gossip Triads” in every program where she formerly had people work in small groups to practice the case of one person in the group. Using “Gossip” Triads, everyone in the group can get advice and counsel about their challenge issue. She’s excited to share this with members of the SIG!

    Jane Tucker has over thirty years of experience in higher education in both the administrative and teaching areas.  She taught negotiation skills classes in the Fuqua School of Business at Duke and currently teaches negotiations and leadership to scientists through grants to COACh from the National Science Foundation and Department of Energy.  She also taught with the Center for Creative Leadership (, an internationally recognized leadership research organization where she worked with leaders from corporations and not-for-profits in the Looking Glass program.

    Dr. Tucker received her Ph.D. in Organizational Development from the University of North Carolina and is an alumna of Wellesley College.  She has published papers on learning strategies and organizational change.

    Tapping into 'Big C' Change with Type

    There is a 'Big C' change coming for your organization, family, or community.     She has coached corporate and personal clients for the past fifteen+ years in career search strategies, specializing in resumes showcasing overlooked accomplishments, networking, and interviewing (telephone and in person). She helps you decide "What do you want to be when you grow up?" by using assessments, exploring options, and marketing yourself (resumes/LinkedIn). 

    Recently she joined Rotary International to give her a broader outreach in the world for making a difference.

    Open Heart Mindset for Strong Leaders

    Noa Ronen, current president of ICF Raleigh Area Chapter, will lead us through a program she has developed on working with the being of leadership rather than focusing on different band-aid skills to becoming a leader.

    Part of what she shares is the Arbinger Institute's philosophy through exercises that will be eye opening and explain how to shift from the need to know how to be with different people in different situations to knowing how I am being.

    Courageous Conversations about Race and End of Life: Similarities and Differences
    Conceivably the most difficult conversations to have are about race, sex and end of life.

    James Daniels and Donna Kaye will provide guidelines for holding courageous conversations on two of these topics: race and end of life. (We will leave the topic of conversations about sex for another time!). In the process, we will discover some interesting similarities that effective conversations about these two topics may have.

    James Z Daniels is principal consultant with J Z Daniels Company Limited, a healthcare cultural competency solutions enterprise. Over the course of his 35 years’ career, Jim has served as an enterprise leader and as an internal and external independent management consultant with Fortune 500 and medium size companies. A self-published author (Strategic Issues Benchmarking Diversity Best Practices), he writes and is published on healthcare and culture.

    Donna Kaye just retired from being a Director at UNC Healthcare's Learning & Organizational Development department.  She will be sharing an approach she found helpful in holding end of life conversations which facilitate a dignified death and good family relationships.
