A Transformative Moment: Collaborative Leadership in a Time of Turmoil

Presented by: Edward Marshall, Ph.D. (Duke Professor, businessman, author)

We are facing a transformative moment in the history of this country. It is a moment of enormous turmoil with close to 125,000 Americans dead from Covid-19 with no end in sight, over 40 million Americans unemployed with an economic collapse unfolding, police murders and brutality toward people of color that has erupted into demonstrations in our streets, and a level of corruption, incompetence, and unconstitutional conduct in our national leadership that undermines our confidence in the basic institutions of our democracy. It’s happening all at the same time, and all at once, and requires the transformation of our institutions, economy, and politics.

There’s a transformative moment happening in our work lives as well: Zoom is flattening the hierarchy redefining how we view authority and power; we are learning how to trust each other even more as we work offline; some are returning to the workplace, facing the risk of contracting the disease, raising ethical and moral questions; the culture of the workplace is being redefined as our relationships are being recalibrated. Through all of this, the impacts of workplace transformation, on top of the larger forces in our society, include high levels of stress, anxiety, fear, and overwhelm as we try to maintain some semblance of normalcy. But normalcy is being redefined as well.

How can we meet this transformative moment in our work lives constructively? There is hope. Collaboration and collaborative leadership offer a framework and methodology for how we can meet this moment head on, and be at cause rather than at the effect of all this turmoil. At the individual, team, and organizational level, the principles and practices of collaboration and collaborative leadership provide new ground to stand on as leaders, new ways to work as teams, and new ways to transform our organizations.

On July 21st, we will have a conversation with Dr. Edward Marshall, former businessman for 35 years, current Duke Professor, and author of Leadership’s 4th Evolution: Collaboration for the 21st Century, due to be published on September 5th. Our very own Ben Wiant will interview Dr. Marshall and you will have an opportunity to discuss with each other ways you can transform your work lives that will put you in the driver’s seat.

Design of the Session
  • Goal of the Session: For participants to leave the meeting with specific collaborative ideas, concepts, or strategies they can use to meet this moment in their work lives constructively.
  • Open with an Interview—The Transformative Moment (15-20 Minutes): After introducing Edward, Ben will interview him briefly about his book, about this transformative moment, and how he sees the forces affecting us and the workplace today. The interview will end with 2-3 questions for the participants to discuss in breakout groups about how they see these forces impacting leaders, teams, and organizations.
  • Breakout (10-15 Minutes): The focus of the breakouts will be on the Impacts of the forces discussed in the interview on leaders, teams, on organizations. Question prompts will be provided.
  • Facilitated Discussion (10-15 Minutes): Edward will facilitate the responses from the breakouts and summarize their findings, which will be the basis for the next interview segment with Ben.
  • Interview Segment #2 (10-15 Minutes): Guidelines for Collaborative Response: In this segment, Ben will ask Edward questions about what collaborative guidelines participants can use to address the impacts just discussed, for leaders, teams, and organizations.
  • Open Discussion (10-15 Minutes): There is an open dialogue on how the guidelines can be applied in their own work lives as they work with leaders, teams, and organizations. The goal is for them to leave the session with collaborative ideas, concepts, or strategies they can use to meet the challenges of this transformative moment.
