Please join  for our Consultants' Knowledge Jam.  This session is designed to leverage the experience of the TODN community.   We invite both experienced practitioners and those interested in external consulting to share their knowledge and best practices for the learning benefit of the community.  

We have invited 3  experienced OD consultants: Carol Brainard, Rob Kramer and Al Sullivan, to kick off the discussion and  share their unique stories.  We will discuss:

  • Lessons learned from launching and running an OD consulting business
  • Strategies for creating  a successful  business model and a building a strong  client base
  • Creating alliances and partnering on engagements.

Our Panelists

Carol Brainard, MBA, CPCC, s an executive coach and   consultant who guides leaders and their organizations through periods of significant growth and change. To results-driven clients Carol brings her expertise in leadership coaching and team development, strategic planning and alignment, organizational effectiveness, and change consulting.  Since 1984, Brainard Consulting LLC has worked with a wide range of organizations including Hewlett Packard Latin America, Procter and Gamble, Red Hat, RTI, UNC School of Government, InterAct of Wake County, and public school districts in over a dozen, large urban areas across the country.   Carol holds an MBA, is an ICF Certified Professional Coach (PCC, and a past President of TODN.

Rob Kramer has provided executive coaching and leadership  consulting for a variety of sectors, with significant experience in higher education and the public sector since 1998.  He previously served as the director of Training & Development at the University of North Carolina (UNC), providing management, supervisory and leadership development for the University's 12,000 faculty and staff.  Rob then founded the Center for Leadership & Organizational Excellence at NC A&T State University.  He continues working in higher education, serving as the Senior Leadership Consultant at UNC’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities.  His forthcoming book is entitled, Management and Leadership Skills for Medical Faculty – A Practical Handbook (Springer Publishing) which he is editing with Dr. Anthony Viera from UNC Family Medicine.  He is also the author of Stealth Coaching (2013).  Rob is an executive coach for the Center for Creative Leadership, an organization ranked among the best executive education providers in the world, and is adjunct faculty at the Federal Executive Institute, the premiere executive training provider for the federal government.


Al Sullivan, CPC, MSOD, SPHR, is the president and owner of Inspirus Consulting Inc. A firm specializing in system wide Organization Development (OD) and change. His approach integrates both theory and practical tools from the Applied Behavioral Sciences. Al has a special interest in integrating the specific disciplines of Organization Development, Human Resources, Diversity / Inclusion, & Coaching. His primary goal is to help leaders and client systems engage everyone to do their best work. Al has experience designing, delivering, and evaluating training intended to improve awareness and collaboration in multicultural organizations. He attends to the various levels of system when training and consulting (e.g. individual, team, organization, and community). His continuous improvement focus helps to connect training design to strategic organization objectives. Additional areas of experience include applying strategies in key areas such as Talent Management, Employee Engagement, Strategic Human Resources Management, Organization Development, and Executive Coaching. Al is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) with over 20 years total experience. He earned an MS Organization Development degree from American University in Washington, DC.
