How much does the generation into which you were born shape your values and orientation to the world?  Is it accurate, or even helpful, to make broad generalizations about people based on their generation?  Are generations really that different or do they have more in common than we realize?

Christie Knittel Mabry, Dianna Teague Lanier, and Larry Rosenberg will lead a lively and thoughtful dialogue about generations in the workforce. The goal of the session is to help us develop a more focused and nuanced understanding of generational differences and their implications in the workplace.

The key to building understanding and respect among generations is to examine the various factors that have most influenced the shared values, beliefs and preferences of the group. What impact does the parents’ generation have on their children’s’ outlook?  What are the formative events during teen years that shape a generations’ view of the world?  How do these influences translate into common qualities or characteristics?  Christie, Diana and Larry will share the latest generational research as well as their own views and experiences to help answer these questions.

Through discussion and questions, we will explore:

  • A preliminary look at the newest generation soon to be entering the workforce – Gen Z (born after 1997)
  • A look at the latest and most rigorous research on Gen Y by Dr. Jennifer Deal, senior researcher at the Center for Creative Leadership
  • Key factors that have shaped our approaches to work and life

As you leave, you will have some practical tips as well as greater confidence in navigating differences across generational lines.
