2015 TODN Leadership Conference

Tectonic Shifts: Impacts of Big Changes on Organizations

March 10, 2015, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

James B. Hunt Jr. Library, Centennial Campus, NCSU

Please join us for the 2015 TODN Leadership Conference on Tectonic Shifts!

Almost every organization has gone through a major change in recent time. There have been mergers and acquisitions, downsizing, etc. How were the changes implemented? What worked and what didn’t? How can we help our organizations or our clients move through the tidal waves of change?

We are excited to host three distinguished thought leaders from across the Triangle to help us explore new ways to address change:

  • David Kiel, DPH, Leadership Coordinator at the UNC-CH Center for Faculty Excellence
  • Rebecca Holland New, SVP/CHRO, Patheon/DPx
  • Paul Mugge, Executive Director of CIMS and Professor of Innovation, NC State Poole College of Management.

Join us for networking and a light breakfast at 8:00 and get to know your fellow OD colleagues.

David Kiel, Leadership Coordinator, UNC-CH Center for Faculty Excellence, was a founding member of the TODN and has been involved in the field of OD since 1974, when he completed his doctoral dissertation on consulting for innovation at the UNC School of Public Health. Since that time he has taught organizational theory and organizational behavior at three public universities, worked in private consulting firm, and has had his own consultancy since 1985 with many projects in strategic planning facilitation, conflict resolution, team building and leadership development. He has worked primarily in government, non-profit, small business, education, and health care settings.  Since 2000 he has worked full on leadership development and OD in higher education, creating seven faculty leadership development programs at UNC Chapel Hill.  Kiel plans to leave the university on August 1 to write a book on faculty leadership development and OD in higher education. He has been a professional member of the NTL Institute since 1998 and has served as Steward of the Research Community of Practice for NTL.  He has written numerous articles and several book chapters on organization change topics, the latest being the Chapter on Action Research in the 2014 NTL Handbook of Organizational Development.

Paul Mugge, Director of the Center for Innovation Management Studies and Innovation Professor at NC State University’s Poole College of Management, comes to the position with more than 35 years service with IBM where he led the reengineering of its Market Planning and new product development (IPD) process under the leadership of IBM Chairman and CEO Lou V. Gerstner. This experience taught Paul that the ‘way’ in which products and services are developed is essential to creating winning products. Product and service innovation is more than ‘good engineering’ and broader than the R&D function – it is the result of informed, cross-disciplinary team (marketing, field service, finance, procurement, etc.) working to a common model and supported with world-class processes and tools.

The cornerstone of the CIMS approach is its Innovation Management (IM) Framework. CIMS developed this construct to help make complex, interrelated challenges easy to visualize and understand. The IM Framework takes the mystery out of innovation management by breaking it down into elements that can be learned, practiced, measured and ultimately improved.  At CIMS, the IM Framework is the foundation for many of the assessments, tools, programs and training it offers members and clients.
