Change is Changing: Adaptive Capacity for Uncertain Times

January 27, 6-8pm, Durham Chamber of Commerce

Light refreshments will be served.

Networking from 6-6:30pm.

How many change initiatives do you know that accomplished exactly what they set out to do? Can you name even one? Probably not, and why is that? In the US, organizations and communities invest millions of dollars to create culture, engage employees, improve processes, or support disruptive innovation. Internationally, nations and NGOs invest billions to develop social, economic, and political systems that work. These change efforts almost always fail to deliver expected results, in spite of good intentions, smart designs, and massive investments. Why do change processes fail? More importantly, how can you and your change efforts succeed?

Human systems dynamics is a field of research and practice at the intersection of complexity and social sciences. Since 1986, the Human Systems Dynamics Institute has set conditions for complex change for individuals, teams, organizations, and communities. Glenda Eoyang, founder of the field, delivers ideas, models, and methods to influence change as it happens. She we will lead us on a journey of Adaptive Action to explore:

What are the dynamics of complex change?

So what are our options for seeing, understanding, and influencing change in human systems?

Now what can you do to build adaptive capacity for yourself and your clients?

Glenda Eoyang works with public and private organizations to help them thrive in the face of overwhelming complexity and uncertainty. She is a pioneer in the field of human systems dynamics (HSD). Through the HSD Institute, Glenda uses her models and methods to help others see patterns in the chaos that surrounds them, understand the patterns in simple and powerful ways, and take practical steps to nurture order in chaos. Her work has transformed change practices for Boehringer Ingelheim US, Canada School of Public Service, British Columbia Ministry of Health, Cargill, and dozens of other public and private organizations around the world. She leads an international network of over 500 certified Human Systems Dynamics Professionals who use her work for individual, organizational, and community transformation. In January, 2015, she will host a certification program in Raleigh/Durham. Visit http://www.hsdinstitute.org/learn-more/overview.html for information about the program.

Glenda’s latest books focus on leveraging uncertainty. Adaptive Action: Leveraging Uncertainty in Your Organization (Stanford University Press, 2013) was co-authored with Royce Holladay. Radical Rules for Schools: Adaptive Action for Complex Change (HSD Press, 2013) was co-authored with Leslie Patterson and Royce Holladay. You can learn more about the HSD Institute and Glenda’s work at www.adaptiveaction.org.
